The GP took a closer look, counted several caf\u00e9-au-lait spots, and asked a few questions about Liam\u2019s development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Liam, for his part, was busy being one \u2014 active, curious, and completely uninterested in the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the next year, a few more spots appeared, along with some freckling under his arms. The GP arranged a referral to a paediatric specialist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After careful assessment over time, Liam was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His family felt worried at first \u2014 which is a very normal place to land. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;What helped most was having clear information, a care plan, and a team around us,&#8221; said Liam&#8217;s  mum.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe keep an eye on things\u2014but mostly, he\u2019s just Liam.&#8221;   <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Liam is a fictional social story.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is neurofibromatosis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a <strong>genetic condition<\/strong> that affects how nerve cells grow. It can lead to small growths along nerves (called neurofibromas). These are usually benign (not cancer).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common type is Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How common is neurofibromatosis (NF)?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neurofibromatosis is considered a relatively common genetic condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around 1 in 3,000 people are born with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), making it the most common type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) and Schwannomatosis are less common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NF affects people of all backgrounds and can occur in any family. In about half of cases, it is inherited from a parent. In the other half, it happens spontaneously (a new genetic change).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people with NF have mild symptoms and may not be diagnosed until later in childhood\u2014or even adulthood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What types of neurofibromatosis are there?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are <strong>three main types<\/strong> of neurofibromatosis. They are caused by different genetic changes and can affect people in different ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The most common type<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Usually diagnosed in childhood<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Common features include:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Caf\u00e9-au-lait spots (light brown skin patches)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Freckling in areas like the armpits or groin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Small, benign growths on or under the skin (neurofibromas)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s the result of a genetic change to chromosome 17.
