Why is the thyroid so important for pregnancy?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
During pregnancy, your body needs to make extra thyroid hormones<\/strong> to support your growing baby \u2014 especially in the first 12 weeks, when your baby\u2019s own thyroid hasn\u2019t developed yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you don\u2019t have enough thyroid hormones while you’re pregnant, it can cause serious problems, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does iodine fit in?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Iodine<\/strong> is a mineral your thyroid needs to make thyroid hormones.
If you don\u2019t get enough iodine, your thyroid can\u2019t do its job properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\nDuring pregnancy, your need for iodine goes up by about 50 percent. It\u2019s very hard to get enough just from diet alone, so many health experts recommend a pregnancy supplement with iodine. The National Health and Medical Research Council recommends taking a supplement of 150 micrograms<\/a> each day in addition to healthy eating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goiter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Goiter (or goitre) is a swelling of the thyroid gland in the neck. It can be due to several reasons and may be painful or not. It will feel smooth to the skin. Ask for a GP to check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thyroiditis <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Thyroiditis is an inflamed thyroid. The inflammation can cause under<\/strong><\/em>activity or over<\/em><\/strong>activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Graves\u2019 Disease<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Graves\u2019 disease is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly stimulates the thyroid, causing it to produce too much hormone \u2014 leading to hyperthyroidism. This results in symptoms like rapid heartbeat, weight loss, heat intolerance, nervousness, and bulging eyes (known as Graves\u2019 eye disease).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hashimoto\u2019s Disease<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Hashimoto\u2019s disease is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. Over time, this damages the thyroid, making it underactive \u2014 a condition known as hypothyroidism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hypothyroidism<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
This is an underactive thyroid. The gland is not able to produce enough of the thyroid hormones the body needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
What to watch for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Thyroid problems are common, especially in women. Some signs your thyroid might not be working well include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
