Parkinson\u2019s disease (PD) is the second most common neurological disease after Alzheimer&#8217;s. There are 50 new cases in Australia every day and about 150,000 people are living with it here, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parkinsons.org.au\/statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Parkinson&#8217;s Australia<\/a>. On the Central Coast, around 660 people have PD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Parkinson\u2019s disease?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parkinson\u2019s disease (PD)&nbsp; is a neurodegenerative disorder that mostly affects the dopamine-producing neurons in a specific area of the brain. Dopamine is a powerful brain chemical that assists in coordinating movement, as well as motivation and reward.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parkinson&#8217;s is not contagious. You cannot catch Parkinson\u2019s from another person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the outcomes of Parkinson&#8217;s?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Parkinson&#8217;s disease is not directly fatal, complications associated with the condition can impact overall health and quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Parkinson&#8217;s disease itself is not typically fatal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PD is a chronic condition that requires ongoing management and care. With proper treatment, support, and lifestyle modifications, many with Parkinson&#8217;s can maintain a good quality of life for many years after diagnosis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What causes Parkinson&#8217;s?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is still unknown what causes PD, but it is thought to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors such as toxin exposures. There is no clear environmental trigger, nor is there a clear genetic association.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the symptoms?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The symptoms of PD can vary. They are not always visible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>tremor or shaking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>muscle stiffness, which can cause pain and affect posture and movement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>slowing of movement, which can make daily activities difficult<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a fixed facial expression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>changes to your posture<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other symptoms that you may develop with Parkinson&#8217;s disease affect how you move, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>balance problems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>slowed speech<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>very small handwriting that&#8217;s difficult to read<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>swallowing changes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>low blood pressure, especially when going from sitting to standing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also non-movement symptoms, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>sleep problems, including acting out dreams and sleep-talking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>constipation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>thinking problems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>anxiety and depression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>loss of sense of smell<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fatigue\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of the symptoms of Parkinson&#8217;s disease could be caused by other conditions. It may take a while to diagnose Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the treatments?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Treatment will come from a neurologist or Parkinson\u2019s specialist<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may be referred to a Movement Disorder Specialist who can assess you, and help alleviate any problems you have in daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also many drugs available to help treat PD.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some cases, it may be possible that surgery could help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Treatment is highly personalised and will follow several tests to discover what is best for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What can I do?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best thing you can do is stay healthy and active. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/parkinsons-disease\/fighting-parkinson-disease-with-exercise-and-diet#:~:text=The%20Role%20of%20Diet,stay%20energized%20and%20healthy%20overall.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Eating well, and exercise is the key<\/a>, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also advise that you stay connected. and keep using your brain with activities like crosswords, reading, playing a musical instrument, learning another language, or sudoku puzzles. Like physical muscles, brain muscles are a case of <strong>use it or lose it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evidence says if you keep using your brain and muscles, they will help you over the long run&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe neuroplasticity created from exercise in patients with Parkinson\u2019s disease may actually outweigh the effects of neurodegeneration,\u201d says Padilla-Davidson on the Johns Hopkins website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">David\u2019s story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well respected for his steady hands and skill as a motor mechanic, David from Toukley now faces the daily challenges of living with Parkinson&#8217;s disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the symptoms began to manifest, David found himself grappling with a sense of loss and uncertainty. The tremors in his hands made simple tasks like holding a wrench or tying his shoelaces daunting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A year ago, David&#8217;s once-confident stride had been replaced by a hesitant shuffle. Fox (who played Alex in the long-running TV sitcom Family Ties) was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson&#8217;s Disease.
