It&#8217;s also Dementia Action Week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People unite from all corners of the world to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that persists around Alzheimer\u2019s disease and all\u202ftypes of dementia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">We at Narara Valley  Medical thought we&#8217;d put Alzheimer&#8217;s in focus to help us all become better informed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Alzheimer&#8217;s disease?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alzheimer&#8217;s disease (AD) is a progressive brain disorder. It affects memory, thinking, and behaviour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/au\/dementia-alzheimers-australia.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Alzheimer&#8217;s Australia<\/a>, it affects about one in ten people over the age of 65 and three in ten people over 85. However, it is not a normal part of ageing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two known types. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>* Sporadic AD is the most common and occurs after the age of 65.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>* Early-onset AD (or &#8216;hereditary&#8217;) makes up about 5 per cent of cases. This is frequently misdiagnosed. This presents when the person is much younger, usually in their 40s or 50s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alzheimer&#8217;s disease is the most common cause of dementia, a broad term for severe cognitive decline that interferes with daily life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, 55 million people are living with Alzheimer\u2019s disease around the world. As populations age, this number is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpub\/article\/PIIS2468-2667(21)00249-8\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">projected to triple<\/a> by 2050. It is a World Health issue of concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Australia, over 400,000 people are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementia.org.au\/statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">living with dementia<\/a>, and Alzheimer&#8217;s contributes to the majority of these cases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It affects more women than men. Two in every three people with Alzheimer&#8217;s are living in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the risk factors of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the exact cause of Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease remains unclear, scientists believe it involves a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main risk factors for developing AD include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>* Age<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>* Mild cognitive impairment or traumatic brain injury<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>* Family members having AD <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>* Genetics (researchers have identified several risk genes but the genes that guarantee a person will develop Alzheimer&#8217;s are very rare)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>* Cardiovascular disease (where the brain may not receive enough blood or nutrients)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the causes of Alzheimer&#8217;s?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two known observations of a brain with Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>* Amyloid plaques are the buildup of abnormal proteins that accumulate<em> outside<\/em> the brain cells and interfere with signalling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>* Neurofibrillary tangles (also known as tau) can also accumulate <em>inside<\/em> brain cells and block the nutrients the cells need. This can result in cell death. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the brain cells die, the brain shrinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/0GXv3mHs9AU?si=U-bgCQVJYnom5uNV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Watch how Alzheimer&#8217;s changes the brain<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0GXv3mHs9AU\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:9px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the symptoms?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>The symptoms may include:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>* losing interest in hobbies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>* being less willing to try new things<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>* less able to cope with change<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>* difficulty with money or often losing money<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>* mood changes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>* becoming lost or disoriented<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>* difficulty shopping or preparing food<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the stages of Alzheimer\u2019s disease?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alzheimer&#8217;s progresses through several stages. In the early stage, individuals may experience mild memory lapses and have difficulty finding words.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the disease advances, cognitive impairments worsen, leading to challenges in recognising loved ones, managing personal care, and navigating daily tasks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the late stages, individuals become largely dependent on caregivers and are typically bedridden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is Alzheimer&#8217;s diagnosed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no single test for diagnosing AD. Diagnoses involve a comprehensive assessment of cognitive function, medical history, and physical examinations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your doctor at Narara Valley may ask about your memory, experiences and symptoms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A physical checkup, cognitive tests, as well as urine and blood tests may be ordered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may be referred for neurological tests and brain imaging to help rule out other conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early diagnosis allows for better management of symptoms and planning for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treatments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the treatments for AD focus on reducing the symptoms to enhance the quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, research is moving quickly. As we learn more about the disease, more treatments will become available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A number of services are available in communities for people who support those with Alzheimer&#8217;s and for people living with it. Social activities, art classes, excursions, and respite care are some examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can it be prevented?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What&#8217;s good for the heart, is good for the brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means if we look after our heart health, we are helping protect our brain at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A nutritious diet, physical activity, social engagement, and mentally stimulating pursuits have all been helping people stay healthy as they age. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learning another language or a musical instrument can help your brain form stronger connections and grow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eating a healthy diet, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/what-do-we-know-about-diet-and-prevention-alzheimers-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Mediterranean and MIND diet<\/a>, can provide neuroprotective compounds. Green leafy vegetables, berries, fish or flax seeds, and limiting sugar and red meat are part of this diet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reducing chronic inflammation by eating food rich in antioxidants is an important step. Think fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes like beans and lentils, nuts and seafood.
