SUMMARY:World Pulses Day
DESCRIPTION:Not heartbeat pulses. The edible kind. \nRecognising their value\, and the nutritional and environmental benefits of eating pulses (like lentils\, beans\, and more) proclaiming 2016 as the International Year of Pulses (IYP). The celebration of the year\, led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)\, increased the public awareness of the nutritional and environmental benefits of pulses as part of sustainable food production. \nThey are recommended in the diets of many major health organisations including those established to reduce the risks of cancer\, heart disease\, and diabetes. Pulses are good for you and good for the planet. \n\nWhat are Pulses?\n\n\nPulses are the edible seeds of plants in the legume family. Pulses grow in pods and come in a variety of shapes\, sizes and colors. The United Nations recognises 11 types of pulses: dry beans\, dry broad beans\, dry peas\, chickpeas\, cow peas\, pigeon peas\, lentils\, Bambara beans\, vetches\, lupins and pulses. \n\nPulses & Your Health\n\n\nDiets rich in pulses contribute to good health and can reduce the risk of certain diseases. Pulses are a key part of healthy vegetarian and Mediterranean diets and dietary recommendations from diabetes\, heart health\, and cancer organisations all include pulses. \n\n\n

We want the truth to be known about leprosy all over the world: leprosy is curable and treatment is free. \nLeprosy is a bacterial infection. \nAll over the world\, people have incorrect and harmful beliefs about leprosy. These beliefs are based on myths and they lead to discrimination against people affected by leprosy\, they cause people to hide their symptoms and delay treatment. When we tackle those myths we become leprosy champions and move ourselves closer to a world without leprosy. \nWe celebrate World Leprosy Day to raise awareness of a disease that many people think does not exist anymore.\nEach year there are 200\,000 people diagnosed with leprosy and there are millions who are living with the damaging consequences of delayed leprosy treatment. \nWorld Leprosy Day is an opportunity to celebrate the lives of those affected\, raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of the disease\, and tackle the stigma that too often surrounds leprosy. It is also an opportunity to raise money so that we can be the generation that ends leprosy transmission.

SUMMARY:World Braille Day
DESCRIPTION:World Braille Day\, celebrated since 2019\, is observed to raise awareness of the importance of Braille as a means of communication in the full realisation of human rights for blind and partially sighted people. \nBraille is a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots to represent each letter and number\, and even musical\, mathematical\, and scientific symbols. Braille (named after its inventor in 19th century France\, Louis Braille) is used by blind and partially sighted people to read the same books and periodicals as those printed in a visual font. \n  \n

SUMMARY:International Day of Epidemic Preparedness
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations has made a call for all member stakeholders to unite to prepare for epidemics. \nAs exemplified by the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic major infectious diseases and epidemics have devastating impacts on human lives. \nThey wreak havoc on long-term social and economic development. Global health crises threaten to overwhelm already overstretched health systems\, disrupt global supply chains and cause disproportionate devastation of the livelihoods of people\, including women and children\, and the economies of the poorest and most vulnerable countries. \nThere is an urgent need to have resilient and robust health systems\, reaching those who are vulnerable or in vulnerable situations. \nIn the event of the absence of international attention\, future epidemics could surpass previous outbreaks in terms of intensity and gravity. There is great need of raising awareness\, the exchange of information\, scientific knowledge and best practices\, quality education\, and advocacy programmes on epidemics at the local\, national\, regional and global levels as effective measures to prevent and respond to epidemics.
