SUMMARY:World Braille Day
DESCRIPTION:World Braille Day\, celebrated since 2019\, is observed to raise awareness of the importance of Braille as a means of communication in the full realization of the human rights for blind and partially sighted people. \nBraille is a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots to represent each letter and number\, and even musical\, mathematical and scientific symbols. Braille (named after its inventor in 19th century France\, Louis Braille) is used by blind and partially sighted people to read the same books and periodicals as those printed in a visual font.

SUMMARY:International Migrants Day
DESCRIPTION:The UN Migration Agency (IOM) defines a migrant as any person who is moving or has moved across an international border or within a State away from his/her habitual place of residence\, regardless of (1) the person’s legal status; (2) whether the movement is voluntary or involuntary; (3) what the causes for the movement are; or (4) what the length of the stay is. \nRegardless of the reasons that compel people to move\, migrants and displaced people represent some of the most vulnerable and marginalized groups in society\, and are often exposed to abuse and exploitation\, have limited access to essential services including healthcare\, and are faced with xenophobic attacks and stigma fueled by misinformation.

SUMMARY:World Soil Day
DESCRIPTION:Soil and water\, a source of life\nOur planet’s survival depends on the precious link between soil and water. Over 95 percent of our food originates from these two fundamental resources. Soil water\, vital for nutrient absorption by plants\, binds our ecosystems together. This symbiotic relationship is the foundation of our agricultural systems. \nDid you know the soil in the earth is a lot like the microbes in our gut microbiome? \nHowever\, in the face of climate change and human activity\, our soils are being degraded\, putting excessive pressure on our water resources. Erosion disrupts the natural balance\, reducing water infiltration and availability for all forms of life. \nSustainable soil management practices\, such as minimum tillage\, crop rotation\, organic matter addition\, and cover cropping\, improve soil health\, reduce erosion and pollution\, and enhance water infiltration and storage. These practices also preserve soil biodiversity\, improve fertility\, and contribute to carbon sequestration\, playing a crucial role in the fight against climate change. \nWorld Soil Day 2024 (WSD) and its campaign aim to raise awareness of the importance and relationship between soil and water in achieving sustainable and resilient agrifood systems. WSD is a unique global platform that not only celebrates soils but also empowers and engages citizens around the world to improve soil health.

DESCRIPTION:Often called our ‘national cancer’\, Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world\, with approximately two in three Australians diagnosed with skin cancer during their lifetime. SUMMARY:World Antimicrobial Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria\, viruses\, fungi and parasites change over time and no longer respond to medicines\, making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread\, severe illness and death. As a result of drug resistance\, antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines become ineffective and infections become increasingly difficult or impossible to treat. \nA global action plan to tackle the growing problem of resistance to antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines was endorsed at the Sixty-eighth World Health Assembly in May 2015. One of the key objectives of the plan is to improve awareness and understanding of AMR through effective communication\, education and training. \nWorld Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) is a global campaign that is celebrated annually to improve awareness and understanding of AMR and encourage best practices among the public\, One Health stakeholders and policymakers\, who all play a critical role in reducing the further emergence and spread of AMR.

SUMMARY:World Diabetes Day
DESCRIPTION:Globally\, an estimated 422 million adults were living with diabetes in 2014\, compared to 108 million in 1980. The global prevalence of diabetes has nearly doubled since 1980\, rising from 4.7% to 8.5% in the adult population. This reflects an increase in associated risk factors such as being overweight or obese. Over the past decade\, diabetes prevalence has risen faster in low and middle-income countries than in high-income countries. \nDiabetes is a major cause of blindness\, kidney failure\, heart attack\, stroke and lower limb amputation. Healthy diet\, physical activity and avoiding tobacco use can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. In addition diabetes can be treated and its consequences avoided or delayed with medication\, regular screening and treatment for complications. \nIn 2007 General Assembly adopted resolution 61/225 designating 14 November as World Diabetes Day. The document recognized “the urgent need to pursue multilateral efforts to promote and improve human health\, and provide access to treatment and health-care education.”

SUMMARY:World Polio Day
DESCRIPTION:World Polio Day highlights the global efforts to end poliomyelitis (polio) worldwide. Polio is a life-threatening disease caused by the poliovirus\, which the World Health Assembly committed to eradicate in 1988. The WHO European Region was declared polio-free in 2002 and has sustained this status every year since then. \nEvery year on 24 October\, we observe World Polio Day to raise awareness of the importance of polio vaccination to protect every child from this devastating disease\, and to celebrate the many parents\, professionals and volunteers whose contributions make polio eradication achievable. \nTo ensure a polio-free future for everyone\, efforts must continue to maintain high immunisation coverage\, implement high-quality surveillance to detect any presence of the virus\, and prepare to respond in the event of an outbreak.
