SUMMARY:World Toilet Day
DESCRIPTION:This essential space\, at the centre of our lives\, should be safe and secure. But for billions of people\, sanitation is under threat from conflict\, climate change\, disasters and neglect. \n‘Safe toilets for all by 2030’ is one of the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 6 – but the world is seriously off track. \n3.5 billion people still live without safely managed sanitation\, including 419 million who practise open defecation. \nFaster action to improve and protect people’s access to sanitation is critical to building a fairer\, more peaceful world.

SUMMARY:International Day of the World's Indigenous People
DESCRIPTION:There are an estimated 476 million Indigenous Peoples in the world living across 90 countries. They make up less than 6 per cent of the world’s population\, but account for at least 15 per cent of the poorest. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s estimated 7\,000 languages and represent 5\,000 different cultures. \nIndigenous Peoples are inheritors and practitioners of unique cultures and ways of relating to people and the environment. They have retained social\, cultural\, economic and political characteristics that are distinct from those of the dominant societies in which they live. Despite their cultural differences\, Indigenous Peoples from around the world share common problems related to the protection of their rights as distinct peoples. \nIndigenous Peoples have sought recognition of their identities\, their way of life and their right to traditional lands\, territories and natural resources for years. Yet\, throughout history\, their rights have been violated. Indigenous Peoples today\, are arguably among the most disadvantaged and vulnerable groups of people in the world. The international community now recognises that special measures are required to protect their rights and maintain their distinct cultures and way of life. \nIn order to raise awareness of the needs of these population groups\, every 9 August commemorates the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples\, chosen in recognition of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations held in Geneva in 1982.

SUMMARY:International Youth Day
DESCRIPTION:August 12 is the United Nations International Youth Day. \nHalf of the people on our planet are 30 or younger\, and this is expected to reach 57% by the end of 2030. \nThe majority of people agree that the age balance in politics is wrong. More than two-thirds (69%) of people across all age groups agree that more opportunities for younger people to have a say in policy development/change would make political systems better.
