SUMMARY:World Parkinson's Day
DESCRIPTION:Today in Australia\, 38 people will hear the words ‘you have Parkinson’s’ for the very first time. That’s more than one person every hour\, of every day. \nParkinson’s Awareness Month provides opportunities to learn more about the issues facing people living with Parkinson’s every day – and how their lives can be improved – particularly through exercise\, social opportunities\, and community activities. \nParkinson’s is a progressive\, degenerative condition of the central nervous system. Its causes are unknown\, and a cure has not yet been found. \nWith close to 50 symptoms\, the complexity of Parkinson’s is severely underestimated. The recognisable symptoms of Parkinson’s are just the tip of the iceberg. Beneath the surface there are many more than 20 non-motor symptoms ranging from nuisance to life threatening

SUMMARY:World Down Syndrome Day
DESCRIPTION:Down syndrome occurs when an individual has an extra partial (or whole) copy of chromosome 21. It is not yet know why this syndrome occurs\, but Down syndrome has always been a part of the human condition. The General Assembly decided\, with effect from 2012\, to observe World Down Syndrome Day on 21 March each year. In order to raise public awareness of Down syndrome\, the General Assembly invites all Member States\, relevant organisations of the United Nations system and other international organisations\, as well as civil society\, including non-governmental organisations and the private sector\, to observe World Down Syndrome Day in an appropriate manner.

SUMMARY:Physical Disability Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday February 2nd 2025\, Physical Disability Australia will be hosting the third Physical Disability Awareness Day. \nEstablished in 2023 after seeing a gap in the awareness calendar for highlighting physical disabilities\, this very special day brings attention to people living with physical disability\, their contributions and the many conditions that fall under the physical disability umbrella. \nThe day also provides a wonderful opportunity for people to come together and  be united in their support for Australia’s physical disability community. \nThe ever popular online DisabiliTEA event will once again also be held\, this time with a fun Trivia session (with some fantastic prizes) and some amazing guest speakers who will share their stories. The Trivia host and adjudicator will be Laura Scurr\, Physical Disability Awareness Day Committee member and PDA Board representative. \nNSW/VIC/ACT/TAS – 2pm \nRegister on the event website.
