SUMMARY:Biodiversity Month
DESCRIPTION:We celebrate Biodiversity Month every September and promote the importance of:\n– connecting with nature and\n– caring for nature in all its diversity – its biodiversity! \nNature is valuable and we need nature. It provides the building blocks for our survival\, such as food\, clean air\, water\, and shelter. Nature also supports our health and wellbeing\, and our economy. And while we need nature\, nature also needs us. \nThis is a national\, government-supported month. \nAustralia is a special place – full of diversity\nAustralia is one of a group of only 17 ‘mega-diverse’ countries. \nThese mega-diverse countries cover less than 10% of the world’s area but have more than 70% of its biodiversity. \nMany of our plants\, animals and places are unique and are not found anywhere else in the world. \nCheck the link below for details about how you can get involved.

SUMMARY:Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:September is Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month. The Australian Gynaecological Cancer Foundation encourages everyone (not just women!) to learn more about gynaecological cancers\, the signs and symptoms\, where to get support and how you can help us fund research that will save lives. \nEvery two hours an Australian woman is diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer. These are cancers that involve the female reproductive organs – the vulva\, vagina\, cervix\, uterus\, fallopian tubes\, ovaries and placenta. \nThe most common gynae cancer is uterine or endometrial cancer. In 2020\, the estimated number of new cases diagnosed in Australia was 3\,224 women. The second most common is ovarian cancer\, which is often referred to as the silent killer as there are often no symptoms of the disease until it is at an advanced stage.

SUMMARY:Loneliness Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:Right now\, more than 6 million Australians feel lonely. That’s 1 in 3 people.\nYour friend\, neighbour\, parent\, partner\, child\, or colleague could be feeling lonely. \nWhy? Because loneliness is less about how many people you’re surrounded by\, and more about how connected you feel to those people. It can affect anyone. \nDespite how common loneliness is\, 1 in 2 people are too embarrassed to talk about it due to misconceptions and stigma within our community. But we need to. Because persistent loneliness can lead to heart conditions\, mental ill health\, dementia\, and premature death. \nReducing loneliness is a goal we must tackle together\, as a country.

SUMMARY:World Hepatitis Day
DESCRIPTION:Nearly 1 in 100 people in Australia have chronic hepatitis B. Many are unaware of it. \nWorld Hepatitis Day\, 28 July\, is an opportunity to step up national and international efforts on hepatitis\, encourage actions and engagement by individuals\, partners and the public and highlight the need for a greater global response as outlined in the WHO’s Global hepatitis report of 2017. \nThe date of 28 July was chosen because it is the birthday of Nobel-prize winning scientist Dr Baruch Blumberg\, who discovered hepatitis B virus (HBV) and developed a diagnostic test and vaccine for the virus. \nLow coverage of testing and treatment is the most important gap to be addressed in order to achieve the global elimination goals by 2030.
