SUMMARY:World Down Syndrome Day
DESCRIPTION:Down syndrome occurs when an individual has an extra partial (or whole) copy of chromosome 21. It is not yet know why this syndrome occurs\, but Down syndrome has always been a part of the human condition. It exists in all regions across the globe and commonly results in variable effects on learning styles\, physical characteristics and health. \nAdequate access to health care\, to early intervention programmes\, and to inclusive education\, as well as appropriate research\, are vital to the growth and development of the individual. \nIn December 2011\, the General Assembly declared 21 March as World Down Syndrome Day (A/RES/66/149). The General Assembly decided\, with effect from 2012\, to observe World Down Syndrome Day on 21 March each year. In order to raise public awareness of Down syndrome\, the General Assembly invites all Member States\, relevant organisations of the United Nations system and other international organisations\, as well as civil society\, including non-governmental organisations and the private sector\, to observe World Down Syndrome Day in an appropriate manner.

SUMMARY:World Leprosy Day
DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, World Leprosy Day is Sunday 28 January. World Leprosy Day always takes place on the last Sunday of January. \nThis date was chosen by French humanitarian\, Raoul Follereau as a tribute to the life of Mahatma Gandhi\, who did much work with persons affected by leprosy and died at the end of January in 1948. \nWe celebrate World Leprosy Day to raise awareness of a disease that many people think does not exist anymore. \nWhat can you share this World Leprosy Day?\nIf you want to raise awareness with us online this World Leprosy Day\, here are some key facts and details that you can share: \n\nLeprosy is curable with a combination of antibiotics known as Multi Drug Therapy (MDT). This treatment is available for free across the world. If leprosy is not treated\, it can lead to serious complications.\nLeprosy is at least 4\,000 years old\, making it one of the oldest diseases known to humanity. However\, we believe we can be the generation that finally ends the transmission of leprosy – our target is zero transmission by 2035.\nçand many millions are living with leprosy-related disabilities\, particularly across Asia\, Africa\, and South America.\nYou can donate to help treat a person with leprosy at donate.leprosymission.org

SUMMARY:International Migrants Day
DESCRIPTION:The UN Migration Agency (IOM) defines a migrant as any person who is moving or has moved across an international border or within a State away from his/her habitual place of residence\, regardless of (1) the person’s legal status; (2) whether the movement is voluntary or involuntary; (3) what the causes for the movement are; or (4) what the length of the stay is. \nRegardless of the reasons that compel people to move\, migrants and displaced people represent some of the most vulnerable and marginalized groups in society\, and are often exposed to abuse and exploitation\, have limited access to essential services including healthcare\, and are faced with xenophobic attacks and stigma fueled by misinformation.

SUMMARY:World Soil Day
DESCRIPTION:Soil and water\, a source of life\nOur planet’s survival depends on the precious link between soil and water. Over 95 percent of our food originates from these two fundamental resources. Soil water\, vital for nutrient absorption by plants\, binds our ecosystems together. This symbiotic relationship is the foundation of our agricultural systems. \nDid you know the soil in the earth is a lot like the microbes in our gut microbiome? \nHowever\, in the face of climate change and human activity\, our soils are being degraded\, putting excessive pressure on our water resources. Erosion disrupts the natural balance\, reducing water infiltration and availability for all forms of life. \nSustainable soil management practices\, such as minimum tillage\, crop rotation\, organic matter addition\, and cover cropping\, improve soil health\, reduce erosion and pollution\, and enhance water infiltration and storage. These practices also preserve soil biodiversity\, improve fertility\, and contribute to carbon sequestration\, playing a crucial role in the fight against climate change. \nWorld Soil Day 2024 (WSD) and its campaign aim to raise awareness of the importance and relationship between soil and water in achieving sustainable and resilient agrifood systems. WSD is a unique global platform that not only celebrates soils but also empowers and engages citizens around the world to improve soil health.
